Success Stories

Hello everyone...my husband (81) and I (77) keep active by bike riding 9 miles (me) and 12 miles (him) at least 2 times a week. He goes a further distance than me because he rides faster, covers more distance, comes back to check on me, then heads off again. We both bowl 2 days a week.. 1 day practice, 1 day in a league. I try to meet and walk one day a week with a dear friend and her 3 year old twin boys. My husband and I continue to care for all of our home and yard maintenance. He is active in a Seniors In Retirement organization, is editor of its monthly newsletter requiring his time and expertise on the computer, and is assistant treasurer. After retiring 14 years ago, I continued working parttime two days a week until four months ago - time to enjoy every day with my husband, family and friends.

I am very pleased with the Governors Challenge. As a Elementary School PE teacher I am on my feet all day and pretty active already. Usually when I get home I just want to relax. Well the Governors Challenge has pushed me to get out and be active after work. It was really not very difficult for me to complete. I just did the things I enjoy doing and logged it. I am recommending my friends to try as well. I am hoping to get as many people involved as possible. I hope that it become contagious and not only my students, but parents, and teacher become involved.

I am actually training for mini Triathlons around the state of California. I saw this add for the Governers Challenge and knew it would only help and have another acheivement under my belt along with my total weight loss of 82 pounds, going from 267 to 185 pounds. I currently run, hike, bike and swim on a constant basis at least 4 times a week while working part time at Costco, and being a full time student at Cal State Bakersfield. Being active and maintaining a good health and shape is important and hopefully this challenge motivated others to do the same as well. I look forward to helping others down the road as I am going into California Highway Patrol in less then a year and a half. Thanks for the fun challenge, I would continue it as often as possible in all types of schools. James Helble
