What is the Governor's Challenge?

The Governor's Challenge is to be active 30-60 minutes a day at least three days a week for a month.

   

What is the Governor's Challenge Competition?

The 2008 Governor's Challenge Competition is a contest among all k-12 schools in the state to help Californiastudents get active, healthy and fit.

   

What are the roles and responsibilities of a school's Governor's Challenge Coordinator?

·     Lead - The primary role of the Governor's Challenge Coordinator is to coordinate and promote activities for the school's involvement in the Governor's Challenge Competition.

·     Facilitator - The Governor's Challenge Coordinator will have the opportunity to upload a school's student roster onto the Governor's Council website and make the administration of the Governor's Challenge faster and easier for teachers.

·     Liaison - The Coordinator will serve as the liaison between the school and the Governor's Council staff for all questions relating to the Governor's Challenge.

·     Receiver and distributor of rewards - The Coordinator receives rewards and prizes from the Governor's Council staff and distributes these rewards and prizes to teachers and students.  

   

Who can a principal select as his or her school's Governor's Challenge Coordinator?

A principal can select a faculty member, staff member, parent or other volunteer to be the school's Governor's Challenge Coordinator. 

   

How do I register as my school's Governor's Challenge Coordinator?

Once you have received your principal's approval, you can register as your school's Governor's Challenge Coordinator at www.calgovcouncil.org/challenge/coordinator.

   

How do I upload my school's student roster?

Go to your Challenge Coordinator Homepage and click on “Upload Student Roster” under the “Options” section.  Then proceed to follow the 5 steps.  To make sure this process runs smoothly be sure to deactivate any pop up blockers and check any internal firewalls.  It may be beneficial to seek support from your school or district's information technology personnel.  Additionally you can contact Governor's Council staff at 310-689-0841.  Please Note: We do not sell, rent or share your personal information with outside organizations.  Please see our privacy policy at http://www.calgovcouncil.org/privacy_policy/ for more detailed information.

   

Why must I verify my teachers?

For security purposes Teachers must be verified by you before they are given access to the Student Roster that you have uploaded.

What are some examples of how schools in the past administered the Governor's Challenge?

Las Positas Elementary School gave wristbands to students who were members of their after school running club, Central Catholic High School gave t-shirts to students who participated in the Governor's Challenge and our 2007 grand prize winning school, Marvin Elementary, invited their students to arrive 30 minutes before the start of class to participate in dancing and stretches.

   

How do I take the Governor's Challenge myself or administer the challenge for a group?

Register for a teacher's account at www.CalGovCouncil.org/teachers with the same e-mail address as the one you had utilized to register for your Governor's Challenge Coordinator account.

 

 

Do I qualify for a free 24 Hour Fitness California Teacher Pass ?

Yes, if you are currently employed as a California Teacher and take the Governor's Challenge.

   

Why does the Governor's Council require birth dates of students?

Birthdates are utilized to assist the verification process.  At the end of the Governor's Challenge Competition the Council staff will seek to verify Governor's Challenge completions of schools in contention to receive prizes.

   

What do I do if one of our school's teachers mistakenly moved a student into their account?

As a school coordinator you have the ability to reassign students from teacher to teacher.  This feature can be accessed via your Challenge Coordinator Homepage under the School Summary section.

   

What counts as physical activity in the Governor's Challenge?

To successfully complete the Governor's Challenge, students must be active 30-60 minutes a day at least 3 days a week for a month in addition to the physical activity they engage in as part of their school's regularly schedule physical education classes.  For the purposes of this competition, physical activity is broadly defined and can include any and all forms of physical activity including, but not limited to such things as playing basketball, biking, boarding, diving, hiking, lacrosse, soccer, surfing, swimming, volleyball, walking and wrestling.

   

Who can participate in the Governor's Challenge Competition?

Teachers have the opportunity to administer the Governor's Challenge for their students and to take the Governor's Challenge themselves.  Students who do not have teachers administering the Governor's Challenge on their behalf may sign up for the Governor's Challenge directly.

   

Are there any student and teacher rewards and incentives?

Rewards

All students and teachers completing the Governor's Challenge will qualify for a Certificate of Completion and an official patch from the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports thanks to General Mills.  Students and teachers can earn one patch and one certificate per academic year.

Incentives

·        Elementary School Students

o    Elementary School students who take the Governor's Challenge qualify for a Longs Drugs coupon to get a personalized Champion for Fitness trading card.

·        Middle School Students

o    Middle School students who take the Governor's Challenge qualify for a free lift ticket at Mammoth Mountain

·        High School Students

o    High School students qualify for free 30 day passes to 24 Hour Fitness when they sign up for the Governor's Challenge and free 90 day passes when they complete the Governor's Challenge.  Note to qualify for the 24 Hour Fitness incentives, high school students need to sign up for the Governor's Challenge directly.

·        California Teachers

o    California teachers can download a free 30 day California Teacher Pass to 24 Hour Fitness when they sign up to take the Governor's Challenge themselves.

   

   

How soon can my school expect to receive Certificates of Completion and patches with the Council seal?

You should expect to receive Certificates of Completion and patches of the official Council seal within a month of the student or teacher completion date.

   

What do I do if a student or teacher has not received their reward yet?

If it has been over 4 weeks since a student or teacher has finished the Governor's Challenge and your school still as not received their rewards, please e-mail us the first and last name of the student or teacher as they appear on the teacher's account as well as the e-mail address of the teacher account administering the challenge at Challenge@CalGovCouncil.org.

   

How do my Elementary school students obtain a Champion for Fitness Trading Card?

Once teachers register their elementary school students (ages 5-10) for the Governor's Challenge they will be sent an email with individual coupons that they can print out and distribute to each student.  Each coupon will be redeemable for a personalized Champion for Fitness Trading Card at a Longs Drugs store.

   

How do my Middle school students obtain a free lift ticket to Mammoth Mountain ?

Once teachers register their middle school students (ages 11-13) for the Governor's Challenge they will be sent an e-mail with individual coupons that they can print out and distribute to each student.  Each coupon will be redeemable for a one day lift ticket at Mammoth Mountain .

   

How do my High school students obtain a free 24 Hour Fitness Teen Pass ?

High school students (ages 14-18) must register for the Governor's Challenge directly I order to download their free 30 day teen fitness pass which they will qualify for by signing up for the Governor's Challenge, and their free 90 day teen fitness pass which they qualify for by completing the Governor's Challenge.

   

Can students and teachers take the Governor's Challenge more than once?

Yes. Students and teachers are encouraged to take the Governor's Challenge more than once during the year and record as many Active Days as possible.  Remember, no matter how many Governor's Challenges a student or teacher completes, each student and teacher can only qualify for one Certificate of Completion and one official patch for the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports each year.

 

 

Are Active Days important?

Yes!  The total number of Active Days recorded by teachers and students at each school will be considered in determining school award winners.

   

Do all students and teachers have to take the Governor's Challenge at the same time?

No, students and teachers can take and complete the Governor's Challenge at anytime between January 7, 2008 and April 31, 2008. 

   

Will my school get credit for completed challenges and active days for students who administer the Governor's Challenge individually?

Yes, you will be able to see a list of students who are participating in the Governor's Challenge from your school on your Governor's Challenge Coordinator homepage.
