Bobby Duke Middle School won the Desert Sierra Regional Award in the 2008 Governor's Challenge Competition.

The school received $5,000 to further promote fitness.

The program challenges students to be active for 30 to 60 minutes per day, three days a week for one month.

The number of students meeting the state standard of cardiovascular health jumped from 55 percent at the beginning of last school year to 98 percent at the end of the year, according to officials.

Bobby Duke is one of 11 schools statewide named as Regional Award winners.
