The governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports recognized the Redwood City School District on Wednesday for its physical education programs with a "Champion for Fitness" award.

The district was one of 11 statewide to be honored with the award, given to organizations that "employ innovation, inspiration and initiative to positively impact physical activity, fitness levels and the well being of California children and youth."

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger placed a medal around the neck of Redwood City School District Superintendent Jan Christensen in a ceremony also attended by state Superintendent of Schools Jack O'Connell.

"We know there is a link between learning and good health and our partners have made it possible to educate our students about the importance of staying healthy and eating right," Christensen said in a statement.

The council recognized the district for several programs, including a walking and running course jointly planned with SequoiaHospital and the San Francisco Giants; health and nutrition workshops for low-income families; and an activity guide created by a wellness coordinator position funded through grants from Kaiser Permanente and Catholic Healthcare West.
