Camarillo's University Preparation School has won the Gold Coast Regional Award in the 2008 Governor's Challenge Competition.

University Preparation School was one of 62 Gold Coast schools that competed in the challenge and one of three that had 100 percent of its students complete the challenge of being active 30 to 60 minutes a day, three days a week for a month.

University Preparation High School has developed a fitness program that ties the philosophy of educating the child with personal responsibility, fitness education and a bit of competition. The school offers activities such as yoga, speedstacking and lacrosse.

Classroom teachers integrate physical activities into their teaching methods. Brain gym, marching poetry and marching math also link academic learning to physical activity.

University Preparation has implemented a salad bar in its lunchroom, replaced cookies with fresh fruit and ensured all chips sold at the school are baked. The school has a nutrition specialist who teaches a six-week course in which students participate in growing organic food.

University Preparation School is one of 11 schools statewide that the council announced as Regional Award winners in the Governor's Challenge Competition. For their efforts, the council will be awarding its Regional Award-winning schools $5,000, with support from Longs Drugs.
