Live like a champion

Students at several local elementary schools recently took a pledge to “Live Like a Champion” by eating more fruits and vegetables and getting regular exercise.

The “Like Like a Champion” tour is a 16-week statewide mobile outreach campaign to get children moving and empower them to make healthy lifestyle choices now and in the future. In its fourth year, the program is sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross of California in collaboration with the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Locally, the Live Like a Champion tour came to Loleta Elementary and FreshwaterElementary schools last week and also held a program last Saturday at the farmers market on the ArcataPlaza. During the programs, children learned what fruits and vegetables their favorite athletes eat and also what exercises they participate in. The kids also learned about the importance of exercise and got hands-on exercise by participating in various exercise stations, including the “Misty May-Treanor's Dig, Set and Spike Like a Champion” volleyball station, the “Jerry Rice's Catch Like a Champion” football station and the “Julie Foudy's Kick Like a Champion” soccer station.
