Five North Coast schools have been named finalists in the Governor’s Challenge Competition. Cobb Mountain Elementary School in Middletown, Fort Bragg Middle School in Fort Bragg, Harvest Middle School in Napa, Redway Elementary School in Humboldt County and Northwest Prep in Santa Rosa were named to the list of 127 finalists across the state. The contest to promote healthy eating and physical fitness has 2,649 participating schools statewide. Finalists were selected for their success in getting students to be active 30-60 minutes a day, at least three days a week for a month. Northwest Prep had 94 students complete the challenge this year, according to the Governor’s Council on Fitness and Sports which oversees the competition. Finalists are in the running for 11 new fitness centers and 11 regional awards of $5,000 for new physical activity equipment. Winners will be announced in September.
