GOLD MEDALIST
The California Kids Triathlon (CKT) enters its 7th season and is designed for any child, ages 4-17, regardless of athletic ability or prior triathlon experience. Each distance is designed to enhance our goal to enables completion rather than competition. By doing so, we eliminate the intimidation factor, while encouraging all young athletes to feel a sense of pride in knowing they completed a triathlon.
A Change of Pace Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Yolo County. We have more than twenty years of experience on the local, regional and national level in the running and fitness field. Our mission is to promote, educate, and inspire youth to adopt life-long habits towards a healthy lifestyle.
The CKT has nearly 1000 participants and is one of the largest kids’ triathlons in the USA. Although the event was originally hosted in Davis, Ca (one of the most physically active communities in the country), we chose to move event to a less affluent city, with PE test scores 38% below the state average. We realized our attendance would most likely dip, but in order to fulfill our foundations mission, we felt that providing a city with a high profile event with easy access to children who need it the most would make a difference. As our event attendance has increased by over 150% in Woodland Residents, our next goal is to educate the community and school leaders by comparing their deteriorating Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ) numbers to the rest of the region and explain that events such as this lead to the excitement of exercise and the desire to become healthier.
Participants benefit from the activity of the CKT event itself; however, the long-term boost in self esteem that results from successfully completing an event of this magnitude is irreplaceable
