Santa Barbara Diabetes
Resource Center

SILVER MEDALIST

The Santa Barbara Diabetes Resource Center has been an amazing organization. We met last summer to discuss childhood obesity and health in poverty stricken areas. One year later, our school has been completely transformed. We have BMI's of every child, we have a P.E. program taught by a P.E. teacher and interns, we have evening exercise classes where families and staff, including the principal come together to exercise, we have cooking classes for families where the product is later sold to students, we have nutrition classes for students and families, we have a school garden, we have health carnivals where students play dance revolution and families have their sugar levels checked by nurses, we have a referral process to the neighborhood clinic, but most importantly we have a renewed optimism that we can break the cycle of obesity and change the habits of our families. When we began the year, 53% of our student body was over the 85 percentile. Half of our kids! Now we have less than 46% over the 85% percentile. Including four students who lost a combined 37 pounds. Our school is motivated to move through SBDRC. They have opened an office on campus and have become a resource to all. Ask Sandie, the school nurse, who has dropped over 20 pounds. We have been motivated to move by the SBDRC!
