Lift/Levantate

BRONZE MEDALIST

The following rationale for consideration was submitted for this Spotlight Award:

LIFT / Levántate! is a non-profit organization created to promote youth and family wellness in low-income communities. LIFT provides programs “without walls”...there are no barriers to participation. Their multi-lingual, multi-cultural classes, workshops and afterschool programs are free to low income children and families and are delivered locally incorporating community resources. LIFT's mission is to educate and motivate children and families to engage in healthy activities. Their programs are specifically focused on physical activity, proper nutrition, gardening, diabetes prevention and positive life choices because LIFT understands how these components work together to foster lasting health. Also, for the physical component non-competitive, non-skill exercise is taught so that the joys and benefits of living an active life are made easily accessible for everyone, non-athletes included. This includes Zumba, yoga (often in the creative shapes of fruits and vegetables), hoola hooping, jumprope and more.
