GOLD MEDALIST

The Monroe PTA has made a tremendous impact by promoting physical activity in several ways at Monroe Elementary School. Six years ago a measly 6.6% of the fifth graders at Monroe could pass the California State Physical Fitness Exam making Monroe one of the poorest performing schools in our district. The PTA raised the funds needed to provide a Physical Education Coach to work with students at all grade levels weekly and build a fitness course. Two years later 33% of our fifth graders passed the exam and the percentage of students passing the exam has continued to improve. In 2008 we had 46.3% of our students pass putting us in the top of schools in our district. This feat was only possible by the PTA providing a top quality physical training program to all our students while at school. One of the PTA’s biggest fundraisers is a jog-a-thon in which nearly all the students, and several teachers and parents participate. This event not only brings in much needed funds for our PTA, but promotes physical fitness with the students training for the event for weeks before it occurs. Kindergarteners run for a full 20 minutes while the other students run nonstop for 30 minutes. Monroe is also one of the few elementary schools who is home to both a PTA sponsored track and drill team! Both of these activities are open to all students and require regular workouts. Our PTA encourages everyone to walk and bike to school daily, but goes the extra mile with two Walk & Roll to school days a year where the entire student body is encouraged to participate. We provide an opportunity for commuting students to participate by gathering at the neighborhood produce stand to be able to walk school.
