SILVER MEDALIST

North Davis Elementary PTA makes physical-fitness and well-being a top priority. Student participation has increased steadily in the widening variety of fitness and wellness activities at NDE thanks to PTA.

FITNESS-EDUCATION/TEACHER-TRAINING All K-6 students attend a weekly 30-minute fitness rotation class with a Parent-instructor (Kristen Muir) experienced in exercise, child-psychology, and curriculum development. Students engage in innovative activities focusing on cardiovas¬cular-fitness, flexibility, balance, coordination, strength, endurance, and sports-related skills. Fitness-Instructor concurrently trains classroom teachers to lead these activities.

JUMP-ROPE-CLUB Our fitness-instructor pioneered another innovative program for K-6 students during recess, with 50-150 weekly participants. Students who don’t typically participate in team sports have the opportunity to work with teammates, choreographing routines for performance, incorporating agility-building techniques like Chinese-Wheel and Double-Dutch, while gaining the cardiovascular benefits of jumping-rope.

RUNNING-CLUB This afterschool club replaced a sedentary “Read/Relax” program. K-3 students run the field with their peers. This year, 112 biweekly participants logged 2,319 miles; 37 students reached the 26.2 mile “marathon” mark! Dolphin-Dash. Our annual fun run offers three distance options, encouraging participation at all age and fitness levels, and offering a positive introduction to running events. Over 300 participants annually.

MAY-IS-BIKE-MONTH NDE students log miles ridden throughout May, together riding 27,000+ miles! With incentives and activities, this event has increased awareness of biking for fitness and transportation. Next year we plan to increase the number of students commuting by bike, scooter, and foot.

HEALTHY-NUTRITION through DAVIS-FARM-to-SCHOOL CONNECTION, augmenting traditional school lunch choices, and incorporates garden-based learning, farm-visits, recycling and composting programs.

GOLD MEDALIST

The Monroe PTA has made a tremendous impact by promoting physical activity in several ways at Monroe Elementary School. Six years ago a measly 6.6% of the fifth graders at Monroe could pass the California State Physical Fitness Exam making Monroe one of the poorest performing schools in our district. The PTA raised the funds needed to provide a Physical Education Coach to work with students at ...
