BRONZE MEDALIST Vista Fundamental Elementary School is a K-6 program. During this past year, PTA sponsored Vista’s participation in the district-wide 2009 Jr. Olympics. Teams practiced three months prior to the event. A Vista 5th grader took first place in Tri-Fitness and broke the stadium record for sit-ups; and a Vista 6th grader took 1st place in the 400 Meter Run. The 2008-09 PTA Membership Campaign was titled “Getting Fit with Vista PTA” and included daily morning announcements on vitamins and minerals…”Calcium is found in broccoli.” Classrooms bringing in the most PTA memberships were rewarded with carrots and ranch dip. Each of Vista’s 678 students received a reusable water bottle, a jump rope, and an Eat-Right Cook Book. Food Pyramid Charts were placed in every classroom and students were taught the food groups, portion size, and what foods to avoid. Vista PTA held a District-wide, full-day “Health Fair Expo” on our campus. Booths were set up to encourage exercise (the YMCA had a booth); healthy eating (Trader Joe’s Heart Healthy Foods); health chart surveys; first-aid mini kits, pamphlets on proper weight and height, and info on exercise classes were distributed. The Vista PTA conducted an Exercise-a-thon for its Spring Fundraiser. Titled “Vista Boot Camp,” all students participated in a fun, follow-the-leader exercise routine. Vista PTA now conducts a Game Day Program teaching P.E. two times per week, per class; the 5th graders participate in “President’s Challenge for Fitness;” and Primary Fun Field Day for grades K-3 teaches outdoor exercise and physical skill development in a fun atmosphere. The PTA is planning a 6-week fitness after school enrichment program entitled, “But I Don’t Want to be a Couch Potato!” In addition, the PTA will be introducing the Salad Bar as a weekly lunch choice. Thanks to the PTA, our kids are healthier! |
