BRONZE MEDALIST The following rationale for consideration was submitted for this Spotlight Award: The Helmers FIT TEAM was created by our PTA to encourage good health and physical fitness among students. Our goal is to run circles around childhood obesity. Students run or walk on a quarter mile track with parents and teachers running and cheering them on at the completion of each lap. The FIT Team Committee designed a program where each child feels like a part of a team, yet they compete only against themselves. Students get to add a foot charm to their neck chain each time they run. Prizes like furry mascots and foot tokens are awarded at each 5-mile mark. Students participate in "Fit Fridays" wearing their blue "FIT TEAM" shirts knowing they are participating in something healthy! The FIT Team is promoted via flyers, posters, newsletters and weekly assemblies. Classes with the highest participation retain an "Olympic torch" in each grade level. An After School "FIT TEAM" Enrichment Class is now offered for runners who want to add to their miles after school. Our Helmers school community looks forward each year to participating in this popular program. We have 100 percent student and teacher participation and have run/walked over 100,000 miles since the program was started 8 years ago. The FIT TEAM has positively impacted ALL our students from the individual who has no one to play with…it has given that student a destination and purpose. A child with special needs who is socially isolated and struggles in class now has increased his confidence knowing that FIT TEAM involves him with others. It has lessened the number of discipline issues in the playground but most importantly, this program has empowered ours students to achieve a more fit and active lifestyle. |
