Park Program In The Spotlight
Westside Stepper Drill Team &
Drum Squad

GOLD MEDALIST

If creativity is what you’re looking for in a physical activity program then the spotlight should be placed on the Westside Steppers Drill Team and Drum Squad as a prime example of an innovative, engaging and habit forming physical activity opportunity for children and youth.

Established September 1, 1991, the San Bernardino Parks & Recreation has offered the Westside Steppers program to thousands of youth every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm year-round. The program doubles as a lifeline for at-risk children and youth, providing fun, safe no cost physical activity opportunities.

The Department acknowledges the phenomenal reputation of the program and sees the team members as excellent role models to promote the importance of physical activity. The Westside Steppers Drill Team and Drum Squad program have been showcased in the department’s Health and Wellness Billboard and Bus Transit Campaign (DEC. of 344,899) for the past 4 years and team members have performed at events such as the 2009 5th Biennial Childhood Obesity Conference in Los Angeles, CA. Over the past five years the program has hosted the annual “Stepping Out Childhood Obesity” Drill Team and Drum Squad Competition where teams throughout Southern California are invited to compete to win the “BEST OF THE BEST” team to step out childhood obesity trophy. Every year hundreds of community members, family and friends pack the gymnasium to show their support and cheer for their favorite teams.

We believe that the Westside Steppers Drill Team and Drum Squad is an innovative and inspirational program that is significantly impacting physical activity, fitness levels and well being of the community’s underserved children and youth and should be considered for the “In the Spotlight” Park and Recreation Program of the Year.
