The Healthy Lifestyle Fitness Camp

Brief Summary/Activities: The City of Fresno’s Healthy Lifestyle Fitness Camp is a program devoted to educating youth and their families about the importance of healthy living. This free camp provides children a fun and engaging environment to learn about nutrition and physical fitness. Through education and outdoor recreational activities, the staff empowers campers to eat well and exercise regularly. Activities include: exercise, traditional and non-traditional sports, cooking classes, nutrition classes, science, water aerobics, bike riding, community service, dance, and a number of exciting fieldtrips that stimulate the mind, body, and soul.

Increased Public Awareness: On a Local Level: 1.Implementation of The Healthy Lifestyle Fitness Camp since 2007 2.Campers Lost 231lbs last summer! 3.Continuous local news coverage of camp 4.Implementation of ‘Fitness in the Parks’ in fall 2008: Year round fitness program as a branch of the Healthy Lifestyle Fitness Camp, located at eight Neighborhood Parks throughout Fresno.

State Level: 1.March of 2008 – Speakers at the California Parks Recreation Society Conference in Long Beach, California. 2.March of 2009 – CPRS “Award of Excellence for Health and Nutrition”: Fresno has been acknowledged for having one of the best Fitness Programs in the State of California.

National Level: 1.October 2008- Invited to speak at the National Parks and Recreation Society Conference in Baltimore, Maryland 2.Four Agencies that heard us speak are now duplicating this camp. They are located in: Sacramento, CA; Las Cruces, New Mexico; Munster, Indiana; Buckeye, Arizona 3.October 2009 will speak at the National Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah

Target Population: The City of Fresno targeted low income families in inner city neighborhoods that needed help. Adolescents ages 9-16 are the focus in order to make the most beneficial impact on pre-teen and teenage years to prevent obesity and chronic illness.
