Principal In The Spotlight
Scott Bowman
Rancho San Joaquin Middle School

SILVER MEDALIST

Scott Bowman is in his second year as principal of Rancho San Joaquin, but his legacy goes back over 20 years. In the previous four years prior Scott was the assistant principal and before that he was "THE" physical education teacher. Talk about inspiring to move in a creative way. The units that he designed while teaching, and the current department maintains, were Memory Lane, Medieval Times and Circus Skills just to name a few. Memory Lane was a unit designed to play the games that we did as small children, with tons of additional twists to increase the fitness and fun. Mr. Bowman's department was one of the first in the county to have a heart lab filled with cardio equipment. In their weight room, he created individual sport specific workouts. So far as a principal, on the Walk to School Day - he did just that - walked from his Lake Forest residence to school in Irvine. As the day was approaching, he kept asking students if they were walking to school and they answered back with "if you do..." so he did. See the attached link for the article. http://www.ocregister.com/articles/school-walk-bowman-1877235-students-day

He is the most inspiring man I know. The district office requests him to lead the principal meetings so they can get up and move while engaging in team building activities. He organizes everything with a purpose. He teaches through movement and with him, its all for the kids. District, county and state, Scott is a guru on physical education. He is still working with teachers to post lesson plans to their website so they can be shared with elementary teachers, middle and high school level too. He is the best resource for teachers on how to inspire students to be active for a lifetime.
