BRONZE MEDALIST
Brian Randall, San Marcos Middle School Principal, is dedicated to the belief that increased activity is the path to physical, emotional, and academic success. He understands that our students need a daily diet of enjoyable exercise.
Brian has taken a hands-on approach to inspire and motivate our students. He leaves no stone unturned to garner the support of our district, PTO, and private corporations to fund fitness programs and equipment.
A typical example of Brian’s dedication to students happened on the day that Brian spent quality time with Tofu, an unmotivated and obese student. Brian put on a pair of shorts and jogged with Tofu shouting encouragement for over an hour. Tofu was willing to complete his running for the very first time that day.
Another student, Annett, is 13 years old and had never learned how to ride a bicycle. Brian secured the district support and funding to purchase real bicycles/helmets for our students and he spent an afternoon teaching several students how to ride them, including the overjoyed Annett who is now celebrating her new life long healthy skill.
Brian spends countless hours behind the scenes persuading private corporations to provide alternative equipment to our students. Thanks to Brian, our students enjoy state of the art elliptical machines, stationary bicycles, real bicycles, weight machines, free weights, yoga, dance-dance revolution, heart rate monitors, Frisbee golf, real golf, and ping-pong tables.
Brian’s most remarkable achievement has been to develop an intervention fitness class for our most physically at-risk students. These students receive daily semi-private fitness training in groups of 20, using our cardio and weight training equipment. Out of 185 students, 175 have reduced their BMI and/or significantly improved their cardiovascular fitness as evidenced in their mile time. Hats off to Brian Randall, a principal who changes lives!
