School In The Spotlight
Warren High
School of the Year

Warren High School had 2,342 students complete the Governor’s Challenge in 2009.  Their physical education program has begun the transition from traditional sports to the standards-based approach.   Ninth and tenth grade courses address developing proficient movement skills and expanding capabilities for independent learning, while elective courses in body composition, strength training and cardio-respiratory endurance are available to eleventh and twelfth grade students.  The school offers a series of non-traditional activities including rock-climbing, badminton, snorkeling and canoeing. Warren High has recently completed a major renovation to support student health. It has added a new food court with a juice bar, salad bar and alternative desert bar.  Public Service Announcements suggest healthy eating habits and life long activities.  Soda and candy have been eliminated from campus.  Alternative juices, fruits and healthy snacks have replaced high fat, high carbohydrate snacks.  In further support of healthy eating the school encourages students to keep an online food pyramid diary, in which they hold themselves accountable for the nutritional choices they make.  At Warren High the entire faculty, staff, and student-body are committed to realizing that “health is the truest wealth” and they collectively encourage one another to make the right choices when it comes to healthy eating and active living.

Warren High submitted the following three essays for consideration of the Governor's Challenge Competition Grand Prize:

Essay 1 - Commitment to Promoting Healthy Eating on Campus

The students, faculty and staff of Warren High School, along with the support from our district administration and Food Services, consistently promote healthy eating on and off campus. Through the logging of food choices in an online internet diary, www.mypyramidtracker.gov, students are held accountable for the choices they make. Though there are no consequences, students are reminded that they are held individually accountable to “themselves” for the choices they make. Through our physical education elective wellness classes and daily fitness session, our teachers discuss the benefits of positive food choices. Along with our food pyramid diary, individual goals and objectives are planned at the beginning of the year to allow for students to discover, practice, adjust goals and objectives and reassess.

Our school campus has undergone major renovation. A new food court, complete with juice bar, salad bar, American and International food courts and alternative desert bar have been added. LCD monitors have been installed to support live streaming music video‘s along with Public Service Announcement‘s suggesting healthy eating habits and life long activities. Soda’s have been eliminated from our campus, as well as, candy and pastries. Alternative juices, fruits and healthy snacks have replaced high fat, high carbohydrate snacks of the past. Outdoor barbeque grills adorn the quad to provide our students with grilled chicken and meats that have replaced meats that were breaded and very unpopular.

Soda, candy and pastries are no longer allowed to be sold on campus through fundraising. Not only is this a school policy, but a district-wide policy. At Warren High School, the entire faculty, staff and students are committed to realizing that health is our truest wealth. We collectively encourage one another to make the right choices when it comes to eating healthy.

Essay 2 - Support of Students’ Physical Activity and Fitness

Through physical education, athletics and intramural activities, Warren High School provides its students with essential skills, attitudes and knowledge necessary for an effective and enjoyable life. Our physical education program has begun the transition from traditional sports to the standards-based approach. Our ninth and tenth grade courses address developing proficient movement skills and expanding capabilities for independent learning. Elective courses in body composition, strength training and cardio-respiratory endurance are available to eleventh and twelfth grade students. An introductory course in adventure / outdoor activities is being introduced in the fall of 2009. Our aim is that we instill lifelong, healthy habits and provide a variety of activities that promote enjoyment, good sportsmanship and healthy living. We offer non-traditional activity units including; Introduction to Interactive Fitness and rock-climbing, Track & Field Pentathlon, Badminton, Paddle Tennis, Snorkeling and Canoeing.

The teachers at Warren High School work with mixed gender and multi-ability classes through a variety of physical activities that develop the understanding of cooperation, team work, effort, inclusion, spatial awareness & skills development. We also broaden that range of activities so our students are comfortable participating. Through character building, we strive to educate our students to be physically active, develop lifelong healthy habits, as well as, learn valuable lessons in character that will remain with them for their lifetime and affect countless others.

The school sponsors a variety of physical activity events throughout the year including; Official Team Dodge-ball, Intramural “March Madness Basketball Tournament” and NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Fall Classic. These activities allow students to participate in safe, organized, supervised and enjoyable events that not only promote physical activity, but creates lifelong memories that are created within the school environment.

Essay 3- Need For a New Fitness Center

Through our Community Bond Measures and Modernization, our physical education department has been given a 3,500 square foot permanent structure to develop a state of the art wellness center. Over the past three years, a strategic plan was developed that would allow everyone on our campus the opportunity to participate in a multi-sensory wellness environment. Between the physical education department, the athletic department, state funds and a generous community philanthropist, we were able to fulfill the first phase of our facility. We currently have enough equipment to allow 42 students to participate at one time. We are short eight pieces of equipment for a class set.

Our next phase is to create a measurement and evaluation plan. Through expansion this plan, we will gain a greater understanding of the fitness needs of our students which will allow for the development of newer more advanced curriculum. Our plan includes the need for accelerometers, heart rate assessment tools and pedometers. Accelerometers will promote a deeper understanding of biomechanics and apply its principles for the advancement in aquatics, rhythms, individual and activities. Heart Rate Assessment will engage our students in achieving their goals through pre-determined protocol. Pedometers will play a vital component in participation, individual goal assessment through personal challenges and a positive, controlled sequence of activities.

By initiating this phase, we are aligning ourselves to establish a career pathway for our students in the area of Exercise Science. Not only are we promoting our existing curricular structure, but also providing our students with the knowledge to further their study in the area of Exercise Science, the promotion of exercise and the enjoyment of it. These assessment instruments allow for instant feedback and provide students with the ability to gather personal fitness data in which they can begin to self-assess. Through this process, students begin to accept complete physical responsibility of themselves.
