Del Rey Elementary submitted the following three essays for consideration of the Governor's Challenge Competition Grand Prize:

Essay 1 - Commitment to Promoting Healthy Eating on Campus

Teachers talk about the need for good nutrition in their classrooms, encouraging students to consider what they put in their bodies and how it will affect their energy level, physical health and their ability to think
• Breakfast and lunch are available to every student every day. If students come to the office not feeling well in the mornings, our health clerk will ask if they have had breakfast; if they have not, she will give them some cereal and milk.
• No candy is allowed to be sold on campus. Some of our classes sell snacks for fundraisers, but they are allowed to sell only healthy snacks.
• Teachers require students to bring healthy food for mid-morning snacks, like fruit, granola bars or yogurt.
• As part of the lunch served to students in the cafeteria, we offer a salad bar with fresh fruit and vegetables. This is available to every student every day.
• We do have concerns about some of the food served in our cafeteria at breakfast and lunch, and we are in agreement with our school board that is working to make improvements in our food services.
• One of the incentives we offer for our Accelerated Reader program is popcorn which is a healthy snack.
• Our teachers are aware of the need for healthy eating. At lunchtime in the teacher’s lounge they make some beautiful salads with the fresh vegetables that are grown here in this valley.

Essay 2 - Support of Students’ Physical Activity and Fitness

• Physical education classes, of course, are offered to all students every day.
• Our PE teacher for the 4th and 5th grade classes organized tournaments at lunchtime for these students to keep them active after lunch. There were several teams with most of our students getting involved and really enjoying it.
• Teachers of the lower grade classes have their students run laps on the field in addition to the organized games for PE.
• Since we have no more bus service for students, classes take walking field trips to the library, parks and other places of interest in town.
• Our PTO organized a jog-a-thon as a fundraiser for our students. Not only did we earn money for our school, but the students “trained” for the jog-a-thon by running laps and then ran as many laps as they could on the day of the jog-a-thon. They loved it and asked if we could have a jog-a-thon every day.
• Many of our students are involved in sports activities afterschool. Our school secretary and several of our teachers coach sports teams. Flyers announcing sign-ups for football, cheerleading, soccer, basketball, softball and baseball teams are distributed to students here at school. We encourage students to get involved in these activities for their physical fitness and to help them establish healthy relationships and make good use of their time.

Essay 3- Need For a New Fitness Center

Obesity is a concern for children in our country, and King City is no exception. The fitness center would be an excellent way for students to exercise muscles that are not used in the ordinary activities of the day. With the cutbacks in State funding, we will not be able to hire a full-time PE teacher next year. It is possible, however, that we could hire a person to oversee the activities in a fitness center. We have a room that could be used for the fitness center, and we would have a scheduled time for classes to use the equipment throughout the day. A new fitness center would enhance our physical education program and improve the fitness of our 750 students. It would be a fun way for them to get fit and to be healthier.
