Keebler Kids Marathon Mile

BRONZE MEDALIST

On January 20, 2007, over 3,000 children ran through Legoland at the annual Keebler Kids Marathon Mile. They represented all ethnic groups and dozens of communities in San Diego County.

The Keebler Kids Marathon Mile works with school districts to encourage students to participate in this wonderful event. We provide teachers with a simple training schedule to get their students ready to run which they often use to start running/ walking regularly with their classes.

Organizers keep the entry fees low and offer discounts to schools in low income areas. No child is turned away because they can’t pay the entry fee.

Before the race, Olympian, Steve Scott, led the kids in a warm up and talked to them about the importance of fitness. Other athletes were on hand to meet and greet the children. Every child was a winner and was awarded with a “gold medal” as they cross the finish line. they also received a race T-shirt, a one day pass to Legoland and an UltraStar movie ticket.

After running, children were encouraged to enjoy the hula hoop contests, basketball free throws, dance contests, face painting, and healthy snacks.

Last year, 26 participating schools received money back from the race through “Run for Your School”, a new program whereby part of the entry fee for schools with 10 or more entries goes back to that school.

For many kids, this was their first introduction to fitness. They laid their Game Boys aside and went back to what is comes naturally for kids – they ran. Many parents chose to run with their children at Keebler Kids and then go on to include running in their regular schedule of family activities.

Proceeds from the Keebler Kids Marathon Mile benefited causes such as Kids Are Worth a Million, ALS, Cystic Fibrosis, and The Joy of Sports.
