Information and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
General Questions
What is the Governor's Challenge?
The Governor's Council
on Physical Fitness and Sports sponsors the Governor's Challenge, an annual event
to encourage Californians to be physically active for a minimum of 30 minutes a
day at least 3 days a week. The California
Health and Human Services Agency (CHHS) is partnering with the Council to carry
the Challenge to our employees. In
the spirit of promoting friendly competition and healthy activity, CHHS and the
Council launched a Governor's Challenge competition for all of CHHS' departments
and boards on May 21.
The Council will choose
the winning department by considering departments that have the highest percentage
of Challenge completions and most "active days" (see additional FAQs below for definition
of active days).
The Council will present
the winning department with an award package that includes:

Program Rules
What is an "active day?"
An
"active day" is a day on which you have logged at least 30 minutes of physical activity.
How do I complete the Challenge?
To
complete the Challenge, you need to have 12 active days in a four-week (28 day)
period.
I registered late for the Challenge. Can I still participate?
Yes! Challenge completion requires 12 active
days in a four-week (28 day) period, or by June 30, whichever comes first.
So, if you registered for the Challenge on June 6, you will need to have
12 active days by June 30.
Do I need to register before taking up the
Challenge?
Yes. You will need to track your activity through
your online Challenge calendar, but the calendar will not allow you to log any active
days before your initial registration date.
What physical activities count toward logging
an active day?
For
the Governor's Challenge, physical activity is broadly defined and can take many
forms, from everyday activities such as gardening and raking to
walking, climbing stairs, biking, hiking, sports (basketball, softball, soccer,
etc.), swimming, etc.
When calculating physical activity for the
day, does this need to be done in 30 or 60 minute increments? For example,
can I do different activities in 5 or 10 minute intervals and add them up at the
end of the day?
Absolutely. The Challenge encourages people to become
physically active for at least 30 minutes, but this doesn't have to be done all
at once. You can achieve your 30 minutes
through a combination of activities during the day.
For example, you could spend a few minutes walking stairs at work, then take
a walk during lunch or after work.
Can I participate in the Challenge during
the work day?
You
can take part in activities on your own time (breaks, lunch, etc.) and before or
after work hours. Your department may
also sponsor Challenge-related group activities in which you can participate.
I had an active day earlier in the week,
but was out of town and didn't have the chance to go to the website and log the
day. Can I still do so?
Yes. The Challenge calendar will allow you to
go back up to seven days to mark one of your active days.
